Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has announced an ambitious plan to invest more than RMB 200 billion (approximately USD 29.9 billion) in research and development over the next five years. This commitment was revealed by Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, founder, and chairman, during the 2026 World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference on October 21, according to KrASIA.

This new investment nearly doubles the company’s R&D expenditure from the preceding five years, during which Xiaomi spent RMB 105.5 billion (USD 15.8 billion). The increased spending highlights Xiaomi’s strategic focus on innovation and technology advancement in areas such as smart devices and connected vehicles.

For Japanese investors and markets, Xiaomi’s ramped-up R&D budget signals intensifying competition in the consumer electronics and automotive technology sectors, potentially influencing regional collaborations and market dynamics in FX and equities.
