An AI agent autonomously selected a gene therapy and performed brain surgery on an epileptic mouse without any human decision-making, according to The Decoder. This milestone marks the first instance where an AI has independently chosen a treatment and delivered it to a living mammal.

The AI agent determined the drug, targeted brain region, and injection coordinates during the procedure. However, a calibration error occurred mid-surgery, causing the AI to refuse to continue, and it could not be persuaded to proceed further, The Decoder reported.

This development highlights the potential for AI-driven medical interventions, a trend that Japanese biotech firms and investors are closely monitoring as they explore AI integration in drug development and precision medicine.
