AI-generated videos are rapidly transforming China’s entertainment industry, with traditional actors and livestreamers increasingly displaced by digital creations. According to The Decoder, 95 percent of the 128,000 short dramas released in the first quarter of 2026 were produced using AI technology.
The Financial Times reports that some actors have been compelled to surrender their voice and likeness rights to AI tools before facing termination, highlighting the growing tension between human talent and automated production. The Decoder also notes a sharp rise in AI-related labor disputes as this trend accelerates.
This shift in China’s content production landscape signals potential challenges and opportunities for markets in Japan, where AI integration in media could similarly disrupt creative industries and impact equity valuations in entertainment sectors.
