Interpol has identified artificial intelligence as a key factor driving cybercrime across Africa, with AI implicated in 55 percent of reported cases, according to The Decoder. The rise of AI-enabled attacks has contributed to a surge in digital extortion incidents, particularly involving deepfake technology.

Financial damages linked to these AI-driven cybercrimes have more than doubled, escalating from $192 million to $484 million. Additionally, around 600,000 cases of digital extortion using deepfakes have been recorded, signaling a growing threat to digital security on the continent.

For Japanese investors and market participants, this development underscores the increasing importance of cybersecurity measures as AI technologies continue to evolve and impact global financial ecosystems.
