BYD Malaysia has appointed Inokom Corporation as its local assembly partner, marking a strategic shift from its earlier plans to establish its own manufacturing facility in the country. According to KrASIA, Inokom is a subsidiary of Sime Darby and operates out of Kulim, Kedah.
The decision to collaborate with Inokom follows BYD's shelving of its independent plant construction in Malaysia, signaling a preference for partnership over direct investment in local production infrastructure. This move is expected to streamline BYD’s market entry and expansion in the Malaysian automotive sector.
For Japanese investors and market participants, BYD’s approach highlights the growing trend of leveraging established local partners to navigate Southeast Asia’s automotive landscape, which could influence investment flows and competitive dynamics in the regional EV market.
